Comfort and ergonomics: how spaces and objects change

COVID-19 has forced us to change many of our habits and the way we interact with space, influencing our social relationships. From one day to the next, we found ourselves confined to our homes, which we used as hotels before the virus and which now had to accommodate entire families, with different needs, for such a long period of time. Inevitably, several critical issues have emerged in relation to living spaces, such as the lack of privacy and the inflexibility of rooms, which will probably lead to a rethinking of some of the spaces we are used to: for example, open spaces, which are highly valued for their conviviality, could be redesigned with solutions that divide the space and modify it according to the specific use of each cohabitant, or with the use of multifunctional furniture that can be repurposed as needed.
In an interior design project of interiors it will be necessary to broaden the focus on the relationship between space, people, and objects in order to find the balance between the needs of people and the surfaces available. In this process the following are fundamental and complementary: the role of the designer and that of the companies. designer and that of the companies of design which within have a department of ergonomics, such as in Hebanon Fratelli Basile- 1830.

The aspects to consider for research into comfort are many and varied such as the physical conformation of people, the square meters, the natural lighting, and obviously the functional needs, current and future, paying attention to the performance of the objects over time. We cannot have comfortable and safe homes if we do not have objects inside them. we have objects that break easily, which contribute to an increase in emotional stress; unlike objects that are durable and well made, fulfill their function in a silent manner. The materials with which we build our homes, affect our physical and emotional health, which is why natural materials such as marble and wood have always been present in the history of mankind, not only do they help to safeguard physical health because it is free of harmful substances, as well as promoting psychological well-being -emotional well-being due to their ancestral and evocative value.
This pandemic has also raised awareness that beauty is an essential condition for the well-being of those who live in a home, and cannot be left to commercial stereotypes of style. Beauty becomes a primary value in interior design, understood as a coherent synthesis of forms, materials, solids and voids, capable of interpreting the needs but above all the soul of people, which is always different.
La bellezza entra come valore primario del progetto d’interni, inteso come sintesi coerente di forme, materiali, pieni e vuoti, capace di interpretare le esigenze ma soprattutto l’anima delle persone che è sempre diversa.
